Then my uncle announced that Dad had actually sold more paintings “in his lifetime” aka, this art show, than had van Gogh! The story goes that the famous artist had only sold ONE painting while he was alive! He truly found the character for the moment and played it to the fullest! Of course, my Dad fully played the part of the eccentric artist decked out in his colorful smock with its festive bow and sporting a matching beret! In some cases, they had bidding wars to get the painting they wanted and rushed to get their name on a SOLD sticker and put it on the art! Some were dressed festively, fully appreciating the epic event!Įveryone wandered around the house nibbling on goodies and sipping their drinks. This was his first art show and who knows when he might have another!įamily and friends were invited to the event. Dad started painting! He had them all over the house! We set a date, sent out the invitations and made “SOLD” stickers. It might have been my Dad! He loved a reason for a party and some fun! One day, someone suggested having an Art Show – a proper one with paintings for sale and hors d’oeuvres and cocktails served. We all had framed paintings of his hanging in our homes – all signed with his unique initials - GRAS - and the year. He was inspired by a postcard, a distant location or something amusing. A fun thing to do, he enjoyed it and the family loved to see what he created. My Dad, a businessman, started dabbling in oil painting in his early 70s.
